Desperate families are left in appalling squalor in northern France as fury mounts over the EU’s shambolic handling of the migrant crisis.

Yesterday French police destroyed a makeshift migrant camp in woodland near Grande-Synthe, Dunkirk – forcing hundreds of people looking to board small boats to England to find somewhere else to sleep.

Weary asylum seekers packed all of their possessions into shopping trolleys from a nearby supermarket and walked through mud to another camp several hundred yards away.

The heartbreaking scenes, which saw women and children huddled around fires in the freezing cold as the rain fell, prompted fresh anger over the EU’s open border policy.

Critics warned the European Commission has “failed” some of the world’s most vulnerable people by leaving them in the hands of people smugglers.

Conservative MP Tim Loughton, of the Home Affairs Select Committee, said: “The conditions in these camps are appalling but entirely an own goal by the EU.
