The death toll at stricken Kabul airport yesterday soared to 20 after seven more people died – while fears rose that Islamic State could target the crowds with suicide bombers.
Some of those killed are reported to have died from crush wounds but it is believed that others were shot dead by Taliban thugs.
Military rescue planes are having to “corkscrew” in deep dives from high altitude into Kabul airport and depart almost vertically for fear of missiles shooting them down.
Britain has evacuated 5,725 people from Afghanistan in 10 days, it was revealed last night.
Among those taken out under Operation Pitting are 3,100 locally employed Afghans and their families whose engagement with the UK puts them at risk.
More pressure is being piled on the race-against-time evacuation as intelligence agencies warned of ISIS infiltration in the capital.
