Marathon legend Ron Hill was a runaway success as an athlete, academic and sportswear entrepreneur.

The Lancastrian, who has died aged 82 after a battle with dementia, ran in three Olympic finals, and won European and Commonwealth marathon gold.

He was just the second man to break 2hrs 10mins over 26.2 miles and is still 12th in the all-time British rankings.

In 1970 he set up Ronhill clothing, having gained a PHD in textile chemistry at the University of Manchester.

It pioneered the use of manmade fibres and made shorts with reflective strips to keep wearers visible.
