Mars could be made habitable for humans by installing a giant magnetic forcefield around it, former Nasa expert claims.

Dr Jim Green, the space agency's ex-chief scientist, said that the biggest challenge is stopping the Sun's rays from stripping Mars' atmosphere - which is already 100 times thinner than Earth's.

Creating an artificial magnetic field would allow it to trap more heat, making the Red Planet hotter and wetter, and more primed for growing plants and food supplies.
