Gwennap covers just a square mile but tests revealed it has large deposits of minerals from which copper and tin is extracted.
During the 18th and early 19th centuries the village – used as a filming location for BBC One drama Poldark – was called the “richest square mile in the Old World”.
It had the biggest copper reserves in the world at the time – and it could reclaim that crown.
