Laying aside political divisions, they poured out heartfelt praise for the murdered Southend West MP and asked “Why David?”. They also vowed that “terrorism must not win and won’t win”.
From early this morning, as MPs started to arrive back at the Commons for a day of tributes to Sir David, flags hung heavily at half-mast over Parliament and down Whitehall, as if laden down by sorrow.
Many parliamentarians were still in shock at the fatal knife attack on Sir David, whose jovial manner and smile “lit up” the corridors of Westminster over nearly four decades.
