A section of the media in Tamil Nadu has trashed the government’s claim that coronavirus (COVID-19) cases are coming down in the state.
Health Minister Dr C Vijayabaskar said on Friday the numbers are going down.
“We are now slowly reducing the infection rate in the state. The positivity rate is below 10% in most parts of the state barring districts like Cuddalore. But to maintain a low infection rate, people must follow pandemic rules - masks, social distancing and hand hygiene,” he said.
The caseload in Tamil Nadu is 486,052, while the total number of recovered patients stands at 429,416. The total number of active COVID-19 cases factoring in new infections, recovered persons and the dead, stands at 48,482.
The death toll shot up to 8,154, with the addition of 64 deaths from Thursday.
The minister cited Thursday’s figures to support his argument that cases are reducing.
Going purely by figures, he is right, because the state reported 5,528 new cases on Thursday, while on Wednesday it was 5,584. A drop by 56 cases is not significant because the Unlock 4 phase will definitely risk a rise, doctors were quoted as saying.
