Hundreds of the country’s rarest toads – measuring only half an inch – were released into the wild yesterday in a bid to keep their species alive.

The tiny Natterjack toads, which are restricted to the south-west of Kerry, were rescued from dried-out ponds when they were tadpoles and hatched out in tanks in captivity.
