Have We Have Lost The Art Of Genuine Political Discourse?

If the first thing that popped into your head when you read the title is, “Who are you, anyway?”—then I have proven my point.

We have lost the art of engaging in meaningful political dialogue.

If I remember my political thought classes correctly, politics is defined as the conciliation of opposing ideas. Political discourse is, in fact, a misnomer. Politics itself is discourse.

But the same tools that have given almost everyone the chance to engage in this discourse has also taken that power away from the people. It’s not social media itself that is to blame. It’s certain people who use social media who are at fault.

Instead of encouraging dialogue between opposing views, some who are considered “key opinion leaders” are quick to dismiss those who don’t necessarily agree with their points of view.

Instead of giving meaningful answers, clarifications, explanatory solutions, they resort to name-calling or demeaning remarks—and this is true for both sides of the political spectrum.
