To Calm The Pig Inside Guns For The Oscars

We caught Ang Pagkalma sa Unos or To Calm the Pig Inside at last year’s Cine-malaya Philippine Independent Film Festival online edition where it received the Special Jury Prize. Directed by Joanna Vasquez Arong, it was proclaimed the Grand Jury Prize at the Slamdance Film Festival 2020 and received the Special Jury Prize winner for Best Documentary Short Film at the 2020 Hawaii International Film Festival, among other accolades.

The 19-minute poetic documentary reflects the muses of a girl during the destruction of Super Typhoon Haiyan. The contemplative, black and white film combines myths and reality on how people coped with the trauma in Tacloban.

“My most compelling inspiration has been Chris Marker, especially his films Sans Soleil and La Jetée,” says the Old Fool Studio founder.

Joanna spent her childhood was the diverse worlds of Cebu. “I grew up with one formidable grandmother who loved warning us of being mindful of the spirits who lived side by side with us, and another grandmother who was also remarkable in her own quiet way, always steady even in the midst of tension,” she recalls.

The Master’s degree holder of the London School of Economics and Political Science adds, “I also entered another world I had to learn to navigate by attending the International School of Cebu, a world apart from what I knew at home,” she recalls.
