Rescue attempts stopped following fresh landslips in a nearby hill
Two days after a massive landslip struck the hillside village of Kavalappara in Malappuram and the retrieval of nine bodies, the villagers’ hope of finding some 40 persons alive faded by sundown on Saturday.
The rescue mission was suspended midway following two fresh landslips in the nearby hills in the afternoon. Muddy debris, tough terrain, continuing rain and lack of sophisticated equipment hindered the search operations. Some 48 hours after the landslip, which devastated several houses and over 100 acres of land, the search was halted.
