Residents living in Chennais IT corridor, hoteliers worried
The water crisis in the city and its suburbs worsened on Tuesday with packaged drinking water manufactur ers announcing an indefinite strike, protesting against the restrictions on groundwater drawal.
As the agitation by private water tankers entered the second day, the announcement of strike by the Greater Tamil Nadu Packaged Drinking Water Manufacturers Association came as a shock to residents and commercial establishments. V. Murali, founder of the association, said 1,542 water packaging units in the State were closed since Tuesday. Of these, 450 were located around Chennai. If the order prohibiting water extraction was implemented, 75% of the units would be shut down, and it would lead to a hike in water prices.
