Ministers must introduce a national hosepipe ban and mandatory water metering to tackle the looming threat of drought following the driest July in more than 100 years, infrastructure experts have warned.
The National Infrastructure Committee (NIC), a government agency, has said water needs to start being managed better across the whole of the UK. If it isn’t, they said, the country could face a future of queueing for emergency bottled supplies “from the back of lorries”.
The warning came after a hosepipe ban came into effect in the Isle of Man after an “extremely dry period” and an increase in usage in the past few weeks. Met Office forecasters said they expect August to be dry in the south and southeast of England after confirming that July 2022 was the driest July since 1911. Only 24 per cent of the total amount of rain normally expected in July fell.
