Washington: Democratic candidate Joe Biden is within sniffing distance of the White House after winning the key battleground states of Wisconsin and Arizona in a see-saw election that took a legal twist with the Trump campaign team filing a lawsuit to stop the counting in Michigan, where Biden is leading. It also formally sought a recount in Wisconsin.
The incredibly close election boiled down to a handful of states after a titanic struggle that saw blowout voting for both sides and the highest ever turnout in US history. Biden has polled more than 70 million popular votes nationwide, the most by any candidate ever. Trump has polled more than 66 million votes, a 10% addition to the 60 million he polled in 2016, showing that he has added significantly to his fervent base.
Legal challenges could complicate things as both sides accused each other of trying to steal the election. Trump went first with the charge, falsely alleging mala fide intention and practice in the counting of votes, demanding counting be stopped, and claiming he had already won. He was repudiated by almost everyone, including many Republicans, except for his diehard loyalists.
“Last night I was leading, often solidly, in many key states, in almost all instances Democrat-run & controlled. Then, one by one, they started to magically disappear as surprise ballot dumps were counted,” he complained in a string of tweets on Wednesday morning, many of which were flagged by Twitter. He kept up an incessant flow of tweets, several of which were subjected to social media screening.
