Hyderabad: City doctors have reported a spurt in Covid meningitis cases, triggered by SARS-CoV-2 (novel coronavirus). Apart from causing encephalitis, the coronavirus is found to trigger meningitis in certain patients. Covid meningitis makes up one per cent of all Covid-19 complications, while it constitutes 10% of neurological problems triggered by the novel coronavirus.
According to city doctors, Covid-19 affecting brain and spinal cord are not only common but also dangerous. Meningitis and encephalitis are life-threatening if not treated immediately.
Meningitis is inflammation of coverings (meninges) of the brain, encephalitis is the inflammation of the brain substance itself. Several cases of these two severe complications of Covid-19 are reported in city hospitals.
