‘Omicron driving US cases past Delta peak’
The Omicron variant, which is now dominant in the US and sprea-ding faster than any variant yet, has already pushed daily Covid case counts higher than the peak of the recent Delta wave. By most estimates, the country is in for a significant winter surge. Omicron now accounts for nearly three-quarters of US cases and as many as 90% in some areas. The highly transmissible variant is causing nearly vertical case growth in multiple US cities, with figures doubling about every two to three days. The US is recording nearly 170,000 new daily cases, a 38 % rise over the last two weeks. Officials expect it to break records. The high for average daily cases was 2,51,232, set in January. By some estimates, the US could reach 1 million cases a day, even before the end of the year.About one in 10 hospital service areas have had ICUs at more than 90% capacity in recent weeks. NYT
