The Highest Civilian Awards called as “Padma Awards” (Three categories - Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri) are given by government of India to eminent achievers in various disciplines and fields of activities such as Art, Social Work, Public Affairs, Science &Engineering, Trade &Industry, Medicine, Literature & Education, Sports, Civil Services, etc. ‘Padma Vibhushan’ is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service; ‘Padma Bhushan’ for distinguished service of high order and ‘Padma Shri’ for distinguished service in any field.
The awards, which are announced on the occasion of Republic Day every year, are conferred by the President of India at ceremonial functions held at Rashtrapathi Bhavan during the months of March or April of the concerned year. This year the President of India has approved the conferment of Padma Awards for 85 persons (3 Padma Vibhushan, 9 Padma Bhushan and 73 Padma Shri Awards) including 14women, 16 foreigners (NRI / PIO /OCI) and 3 posthumous awardees.
Renowned Archaeologist, historian, Litterateur and Author Dr.Nagaswamy from Tamil Nadu is also one among the awardees. Taking into consideration his achievements and services in the field of Archaeology, government of India has conferred on him the prestigious ‘Padma Bhushan’ award.
Dr.Nagaswamyhad just released his book ‘Thirukkural-An Abridgement of Sastras’ on 8th January, and I had the opportunity to participate and speak in a Seminar organised by him about his new book. Subsequently, the 9th Hindu Spiritual and Service Fair was conducted from 24th to 30th of January, where in, both of us share a stall to exhibit our works. I was in regular touch with him in connection with both these events.
In one such conversation over phone on the evening of 25th January, Dr.Nagaswamy said that he had just received news from government of India that he had been selected for Padma Bhushan Award and shared his happiness with me.

When I was Principal in Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalaya at Kanyakumari, I had made it a point to go to all the classes in a week. I used to take ‘moral science’ classes. Whatever is to be told to children to mould them and develop proper attitude and good habits in them I used to tell through stories. After experimenting with various suggested courses, I came to the conclusion that a story can be the most effective tool. So, I made my plan that in each class a specific great principle of our culture should be communicated through suitable stories.

The room in Sri Ramakrishna Ashrama in Sasthamangalam appears small but bears all marks of subtle nobility. There are pictures of the divine trio – Sri Ramakrishna, Sri Sarada, and Swami Vivekananda – on the walls as well as some memorabilia and books on a bed. A frail woman in her mid-eighties sits in a corner chair, her eyes faintly lighting up as she smiles in welcome.

Our search can get a halt when we come across a one hundred twenty one years old ‘Plague Manifesto’ written by the warrior sanyasi Swami Vivekananda during the Bengal Plague in 1898.
