This year our aim is to inspire you to ride. But how many miles can you rack up over the course of 2020?

How many miles will you ride this year? One thousand, two thousand, 10 or more? No matter how far, how often or how fast you ride, we’ve got a challenge for you. In 2020 we want to inspire all of you to ride your bikes more. That’s why we’re launching the Cycling Weekly 5,000-mile challenge.

It’s that simple. We want you to attempt to ride 5,000 miles or more through 2020, and we’ll be there all the way to help you along.

We’ve set that target as we think it is tough but achievable for the average rider if they stick at it. By average rider, we mean someone with a job, family commitments and who maybe gets out three or four times a week.

Think it’s too far for you? Well, break down the numbers and it might seem a little easier to achieve. 5,000 miles is 98 miles a week, or 13 miles a day. Set aside a few weekends in the summer for some big rides, or enter some longer events in the spring or summer and you can easily do more than 98 miles in one week.

The flip side is that’s every week. Miss a couple of those through illness, work or holiday and you’ll start falling behind. So if your miles do start dropping off we’ll be keeping you motivated with smaller monthly challenges. So if your overall mileage is dropping off you can still get involved and take on the smaller challenges. And who knows, maybe these will kick-start your riding and get you back on track. These smaller challenges will be things like riding one 100-mile ride this month, ride for seven consecutive days, or climb more than 4,000 vertical meters in one week.

Anyone can join the challenge, it’s free and easy to get involved.

How do you join in?
