Williams gets first World Tour win after 'strange few years'

Welshman continues his ascent up the pro ranks at Tour de Suisse

Stephen Williams (Bahrain-Victorious) was “over the moon” after he took his first WorldTour victory at stage one of the Tour de Suisse.

The Welshman came storming up the outside line of the sprint against a host of general classification contenders to cross the line first.

The enormity of the win took time to process for the 26-year-old from Aberystwyth, Wales. “I don’t think it’s sunk in yet, to be honest,” he said, once he’d had time to collect his thoughts. “It’s been a strange few years – to come here and win a stage, I am over the moon.”
