Bertie Auld praises Stevie Chalmers’ role in the side
BERTIE Auld described Stevie Chalmers one of the hardest working footballers he ever played alongside, and said he always looked up to the man who scored the most important goal in Celtic’s history.
Auld bid farewell to another of his Lisbon Lions team-mates this week with the passing of 83-year-old Stevie Chalmers.
Stevie famously scored the winning goal against Inter Milan in Lisbon on May 25, 1967 and, as Auld reflected on the loss of the Celtic great, he said Stevie would forever be remembered for that goal and much more.
“That’s the two goalscorers gone now,” said Auld. “They were the biggest assets in that team. It was a great team, but without those two history would be very different. I thought Tommy Gemmell was the best left-back in the country and further afield as well. Billy was a tremendous captain and Stevie was a wonderful attacking player who brought so much to the team.
