The Last Word With Paul Cuddihy
Celtic View|Vol 55 Issue 2

CELTIC’S trip to Sarajevo proved to be a successful one as the team recorded an impressive 3-1 victory in the first leg of their Champions League qualifier. Hopefully, they will complete the job tonight (Wednesday) and take a step closer to the group stages of the competition.

The Last Word With Paul Cuddihy

The city itself was interesting to see, and tourism is on the rise. As well as its recent tragic history, Sarajevo is also the place where the event which precipitated the First World War happened.

The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in June 1914 triggered a series of events that resulted in world conflict.

The spot where the assassination took place is at the Latin Bridge in the city, but it is marked in a very low-key way, which surprised me, given its significance as one of the most important historical moments of the 20th century.

I would imagine that, as the city and the country steps up its drive to attract visitors, it will expand and develop the site.

And it was my multi-media colleague, Kevin Kelly, who pointed out that Glasgow band, Franz Ferdinand, as well as taking their name from the unfortunate Archduke, had a hit with a song called, Take Me Out, which appears to make reference to the assassination. Every day’s a school day, as they say.

I AM always conflicted when it comes to social media. On the one hand, I do appreciate the benefits in terms of communication and disseminating information, and as a Twitterer, I like that I can control to a large extent the content I view and the interactions I have.
