Can a wedge fitting really help you shoot lower scores? Neil tappin joins bob vokey at the titleist performance institute to find out.
While Bob Vokey has his own office in the main Titleist club headquarters in Carlsbad, he spends far more of his time on the range at the Titleist Performance Institute. His diary is filled with wedge-fitting sessions, both with tour players and paid-up members of the public (many of whom have spent years on a waiting list).
The reason for this is simple – Titleist as a brand and Bob Vokey himself are trying to convince more everyday golfers to get fitted for their wedges. A 45-minute session with a wedge fitter is, they believe, one of the fastest ways to lower scores. And while we all know the importance of these scoring clubs, how many of us get tempted to buying directly off the shelf?
It’s an anomaly Titleist is keen to address. But what does a wedge fitting actually involve and more importantly, how much of a difference can the right wedges actually make? We wanted to find out for ourselves, so Neil Tappin joined Vokey and fitter Dino Antenucci on the pristine range at the Titleist Performance Institute in Carlsbad, California to see how a wedge fitting works. Here’s what happened…
