What every runner and fitness enthusiast needs to know about BCAAs.
There are many types of nutrients that fuel the human body, and amino acids are vital to the way we produce energy. The trouble is, they are not often talked about and understanding how they fit into the grand scheme of things can be confusing. What makes them different from other nutrients like carbohydrates and protein? We find out, right here.
WHAT ARE BCAAS?
BCAAs or Branched Chain Amino Acids are made up of three essential amino acids, namely, leucine, isoleucine and valine. In the amino acid profile, BCAAs (essential amino acids) are amongst ones that the body cannot produce on its own, as such, have to be obtained through food and supplements.
Traditionally, BCAA supplementation is tied closely with body building, however, its far reaching benefits in muscle recovery and energy supplementation have also made it staples amongst endurance athletes. In this article, we will discuss how exactly BCAAs can potentially support runners in clocking their next personal best or help them efficiently cover that extra mile.
FUEL THE RUN
During runs, the body utilises all of the macronutrients, namely, carbohydrates, protein and fats as fuel, with carbohydrates being its primary source. As carbohydrate stores (glycogen) becomes depleted, the percentage of protein, BCAAs in particular, gets more heavily relied on. As such, having a good level of BCCAs will ensure greater consistency in energy supplementation during extended exercise durations, and prevents the body from catabolizing lean muscle mass for fuel.
