Carrying Drinks In IPL Can Damage Careers
In the minutes before Royal Challengers Bangalore against Chennai Super Kings –perhaps the biggest game of them all in the IPL – Mark Wood, David Willey, Sam Billings, Moeen Ali and Chris Woakes all chatted among one another on the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, readying themselves for the game.
It was a powerful symbol of England’s belated embrace of the IPL – and the IPL’s belated embrace of English talent.
The trouble was, most of the English five didn’t have anything to prepare for. Only Billings was actually playing; the rest were merely carrying drinks. So far, almost halfway through the regular IPL season, Moeen, Wood and Willey have played a solitary game between them.
For the players, it is a little sad. Financially, they suffer a not insignificant loss – players’ salaries are tied to how much they play, and they only get paid 80 per cent per game when they aren’t picked, so a player who doesn’t play at all will end up with 20 per cent less than their actual auction price.
More importantly, cricketers want to play, and that is how they learn best.
Spending the IPL barely playing sounds like the ultimate free vacation. But it can be deleterious to a player’s longer-term prospects.
