GM admits his tenure with Giants just ‘not good enough’

Right from the start of the 30-minute media beat down session, where some media scribes decided it was get-even time, Giants general manager Dave Gettleman acknowledged what the Giants fan base was thinking: why the heck did Gettleman not get the pink slip along with coach Pat Shurmur? Gettleman explained his side of the situation.

“Just to be clear, there was (a) substantive discussion between myself and ownership regarding my job performance and vision moving forward,” Gettleman said at the much-anticipated presser. “John Mara and Steve Tisch made their decisions and here I stand.”

Okay…but Tisch? TGI learned that Giants co-owner Steve Tisch wanted Shurmur, Gettleman, and just about anyone else associated with what Tisch considered an “unmitigated disaster,” fired. So when Gettleman mentioned Tisch as part of the “savior” team, he wasn’t.

But here we are. Dave Gettleman is still the general manager of the Giants (although most fans despise the decision) after coming off a 4-12 season and a 9-23 total record after two years on the job.

Ownership decided that two years wasn’t long enough for Gettleman to implement the changes he wants for the franchise, and that he needed more time to help build a roster to compete for the Lombardi Trophy.

“There are many reasons why the New York Football Giants are in their current state,” Gettleman said. “I have to take my share of culpability. I have had misses.”
