Acquired: 2018 third-round pick, swapped fourth-round picks with Tampa in 2018
This was Gettleman’s first big move. Pierre-Paul was considered a bad locker room guy (remember him laughing when Eli was giving an emotional interview?). His non-caring attitude and feeling that he wouldn’t be the same player with his damaged hand was a major reason why Gettleman decided to move on. The Giants used the third-round pick on B.J. Hill, who after having a solid rookie season has seen his production drop. The Giants haven’t had a productive edge rusher since, while JPP has 21 quarterback sacks the past two seasons. How good would he look in this defense right now?
DT Damon Harrison, Lions (2018 midseason)
Acquired: 2019 fifth-round pick
This is one of those “culture” trades that Gettleman loves to talk about. Gettleman takes great pride in trying to build the right culture in the locker room and one player who Gettleman felt wasn’t the right fit was Harrison. “Snacks” made too much money for a player who played about 48% of the defensive snaps each game. Gettleman felt that the money Harrison was making didn’t match his production. Gettleman and Pat Shurmur both thought Harrison wasn’t “all in” playing for a losing team. They were both wrong. Harrison did not want to go anywhere, but it was too late. Gettleman moved him for a fifth-round pick that was part of the trade-up deal with Seattle to select cornerback Deandre Baker at 30th overall. How did that work out?
CB Eli Apple, Saints (2018 midseason)
