Football has always been a game for the people. At its simplest, some say it is a just a game; just 22 players running around, kicking a ball. Yet, if 2020 has taught us anything about the beautiful game, it is that football, with its power to connect and unite, plays such a focal point in our lives.
This year has been a turbulent and distressing one after our world was turned upside down following the COVID-19 pandemic. The virus thrived off social contact, so we had to adapt to a new normal to prevent its spread. To protect life.
The change saw the football season initially suspended as we went into a national lockdown. After three months away, it then returned for a restart in June, but it wasn’t quite the same as there was a fundamental element missing – the fans.
Football is a storied game but it is one that has developed from the people. The game continues to evolve and reach new heights, but its roots will always be embedded in local communities as people are its lifeblood. The sport’s success is down to the emotions that it imbues – a fierce passion that comes from a unique connection to a club, an identity.
It induces a sense of belonging. For our supporters reading this, your club is your community and, therefore, it becomes a vital part of your identity and it is passed from generation to generation. It’s not something that is forced upon you, instead, the emotion of it all just sucks you in, whether you like it or not. It then brings you together with others, unites you all with that one common love; all from different backgrounds and walks of life yet purely connected by a cockerel upon a shirt.
And those that play in front of us, who wear that crest with honour and pride, feel it too.
