Traditionally, hardtail mountain bikes are regarded as the most efficient for transferring the maximum amount of power from the rider’s legs to the rear wheel. Most rear suspension designs suffer from bobbing under power, which wastes precious energy in the up-and-down motion of the rear of the bike. Specialized remedied that problem several years ago with the Brain rear suspension system, which resists compression under pedaling power, but opens up for a comfortable ride when the impact is being transferred to the shock upward through the rear wheel. The full suspension Epic XC bike became the first full-suspension mountain bike to win a World Cup event and a World Championship— no doubt thanks to the innovative rear suspension technology.
