Gillingham’s home may lack a fourth permanent side but each stand has its own personality and history attached, which it would be a shame to lose.
Priestfield has been home to Gilling-ham since 1893 when we started out as New Brompton. Traditionally appalling on our travels, we are in the top 20 when it comes to all-time home records. There have been plenty of rumblings from chairman Paul Scally in recent years about the need to move in order to progress, and he has just reiterated intentions to move the club to a suitable site at nearby Mill Hill, only half a kilometre from our current home, described (unfortunately) as “a multi-purpose community stadium with enabling development”. With a current capacity of under 11,000, Priestfield has always been about the right size for a club who have had an average gate over 9,000 just once in the 42 campaigns I’ve known as a fan.
