It’s been more than 10 years since the last main Devil May Cry title (we’re not counting the reboot in 2013, which more or less stands on its own) and yet, when this latest fifth installment was announced, it seemed like only yesterday when we last saw series protagonists Dante and Nero with their demon hunter pals. But how does Devil May Cry V fare on today’s console generation, given its long hiatus from the action game scene? Apparently, not too shabby.
Daily hunting
Devil May Cry V continues its series tradition of being a single-player, story-based game first and foremost, keeping to its strengths. No multiplayer shenanigans or extra distracting fluff here. The story campaign itself is adequately lengthy, and although hardcore players will breeze through it in a matter of days, each chapter keeps to a relatively comfortable runtime and offers a different gameplay mechanic or two to keep things from becoming repetitive.
Casual players will appreciate the brevity, while more dedicated demon hunters can gun for multiple playthroughs at harder modes. In short: the story campaign of Devil may Cry V offers a decent amount of playtime longevity and replay ability and delivered in well-split doses so that it remains engaging yet accessible for everyone.
Devil’s in the details
As for the storyline itself, it’s probably the best yet in the series in both plot and execution. Set five years after the events of Devil May Cry 4, a mysterious man named V has enlisted Dante, Trish, and Lady to defeat the demon king Urizen who has come take over the world. V also recruits Nero to join the cause, which kicks off the game’s prologue against Urizen. Yes, the game basically starts with a boss battle, which should tell you that DMCV isn’t pulling any punches.
