How Sex Boosts Health

IT TORCHES KILOJOULES.

It slays stress. It can even help foster eternal youth. Yes, really. Studies show that a healthy sex life is linked to a healthy life life. Bless the researchers for looking into this important matter. They have scientifically proven that regularly getting busy can alleviate pain, reduce anxiety and help stave off colds. Behold: your sex prescription.

Sex for Zen

You could meditate – or you could just bone. Your brain can react to sex in much the same way it does to mindfulness, according to a recent review in Socio affective Neuroscience & Psychology. The sensory absorption (read: total tuning out) that comes with rhythmic sexual stimulation can put you in a meditative-like state, says review author Adam Safron, a neuroscientist at Northwestern University. That, in turn, can distract you from anxious thoughts and lower your stress levels. You don’t even need a partner to ‘de-stress’ – solo play can spur the same trance-like calm.
