Having survived another week, I’m madly checking the family schedule to see what weekend chaos awaits. A free Sunday glows back like a beacon of sanity. For a moment I panic, worrying that I’ve missed something, but no, it’s definitely free! What we need, I decide, is a lazy Sunday family day out.

A short trundle down Auckland’s southern motorway towards the Bombay hills and we’re escaping the rat race. I-spy fills the car, and the clues become distinctly country as we hit the outskirts of Tuakau and near our first destination, LaValla.

Nestled among picturesque countryside, LaValla was once a Marist Brothers college. Today it shines as a unique function location and on some Sundays, it hosts “Sunday the LaValla Way”. The promise is a languid delicious feast for all, with no need to hurry, and buckets of fun to be had. Yes, please!
