The Glamour Couple Of Kiwi Athletics Are On The Right Track
When distance runner Camille Buscomb and her partner, 400m hurdler Cameron French, stood under the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games countdown clock at Surfers Paradise a little over three years ago, the pair made a vow that the next time they returned, it would be to compete at the multi-sport extravaganza.
And the Hamilton-based athletes proved good to their word, representing their country with pride on the Gold Coast, even if it did not go as planned.
“We were both disappointed with our performances in our events,” says Cameron (26). “We have been training so well and in personal best shape, so it was tough not to have the form we were in show on the day.”
An untimely injury picked up just days before the competition led to elimination from the 400m hurdles heats for Cameron. Camille (27) performed solidly but wasn’t able to challenge as she hoped in the 5000m and 10,000m, finishing 12th and 14th respectively.
Yet rather than discourage the pair, Camille and Cameron are hungry to achieve better results in the future.
“You need to be 100% on the right day,” says Cameron. “If CA you’re not, it is hard to compete to the level that is required.”
“It is still unbelievable to think we both competed in Gold Coast,” adds Camille. “It has been a long journey and I don’t think we could have done it without each other.”
