The Star Returns to the Big Screen
Renée Zellweger has kept a low profile for the past decade, with the exception of the 2016 sequel Bridget Jones’s Baby. Now the 50-year-old Oscar winner is making a two-pronged return, first on TV in the Netflix series What/If and then on the big screen as icon Judy Garland in the biopic Judy. Sitting in a sunlit hotel suite in West Hollywood, Renée looks relaxed and happy as she talks about her TV series debut in the show created by Mike Kelley.
“I’ve never done anything that has a little wink in it, where you know it’s ironic with a character as outrageous as Anne,” she says.
“It just seemed like a lot of fun, exploring how we compromise ourselves ethically to push forward an agenda and then justify the moral compromises we make.”
In What/If, Renée plays the mysterious and wealthy Anne Montgomery, a woman with a secret connected to the ethically perilous proposition she makes to two struggling newlyweds desperate to secure a financial windfall. “Anne and I don’t share much in common at all, but I’m interested in her wardrobe though,” she chuckles.
