As Faye sat in the front row of the 12th-century village church, tears of joy rolled down her cheeks. Wiping them away, she smiled.
She couldn’t be prouder of her two daughters. They may not have shared the same blood, but they were sisters, all the same. They were also best friends and had organised this wedding together, from picking the colour scheme to the wedding breakfast venue. All the groom had to do was turn up at the church on time and look smart in his charcoal-grey suit.
Faye gazed at Roxy standing next to her betrothed dressed in a long, white lace gown, her natural blonde curls cascading down her back.
She then looked at Suzie, standing to the side, elegantly holding her sister’s bouquet. Wearing a strapless purple dress, her long dark hair fell over her bare shoulders.
Faye ran her hand through her own dark hair, remembering what it used to look like before silver strands started to appear and she had chosen to have it cut short into a manageable bob.
Suddenly, she felt a warm, gentle squeeze of her hand from her husband, then he lent across to kiss her wet cheek. As he gazed at her with his own glistening eyes, she knew his tears were due to a mixture of happy and sad thoughts.
Today would be hard for him and Roxy. All sorts of memories would come flooding back, including those that had brought them all together on this special day.
*****
Faye sat down at the table in the ice cream parlour with her five-year-old daughter Suzie. It was a warm Saturday afternoon and a treat was exactly what they both needed to cool them down after a busy time in the sun.
