Few things lift the spirit more than a mass of bluebells carpeting a woodland floor, but they need our help, explains Adrienne Wild.
Legend has it that fairies used bluebells as bait to kidnap children playing in the woods! And folk tales also claim that if you wear a wreath of bluebells, you’ll be compelled to speak nothing but the truth…
It seems surprising that these beautiful blooms should have a reputation for mischief-making because, for hundreds of years, the arrival of our native bluebells has justly been a cause for celebration. Nowadays, photographers gardeners and families all make annual pilgrimages to ancient woodlands to see them at their best.
These awesome spring displays magically cover the bare soil with vast sheets of cobalt blue, just as the bright green leafy canopy opens above them. They’re at their best around the last week of April and the first week of May.
