When Prince Harry threw a tantrum over losing police protection in the UK and claimed he didn't feel safe returning to London, the rest of the family assumed it was just his usual emotional reaction to not getting his own way.
Indeed, given that he's happily promoting a trip to the Netherlands in two weeks' time, those close to the 37-year-old assumed that despite his public spat against the Home Office, he would return from the US to support his elderly grandmother as she marked one year since her husband Prince Philip died with an emotional church service at Westminster Abbey.
“This service, with Philip's near and distant relatives, friends and supporters, was designed to make up for the fact that they couldn't hold a proper funeral when he died last year due to pandemic restrictions," says a palace source. "It was a family event and it was expected that everyone should be there. The Queen herself can barely walk and there are serious concerns for her health, but even she soldiered on in honour of her late husband. This makes Harry's absence all the more shocking.”
