The Austrian capital has been crowned the world’s most liveable city – pushing Melbourne out of the top spot. After a recent visit, I can see why.

1 The hidden gem

Austria often gets overlooked when Kiwis head to Europe, but I love its slightly off-thebeaten-path aura and old-world grandeur. Vienna sits on the banks of the Danube River and it’s super-easy to find the good stuff – it’s all within the city’s leafy Ring Road. This grand circular boulevard is where the city’s medieval fortifications once stood. Inside it, you’ll find the gothic St Stephen’s Cathedral with its colourful tiled roof, the gorgeous (and quite fancy) shops, the horses and carts trotting tourists around, and the worldrenowned opera house.
