It was a sight to melt a thousand hearts! Ever since their twins arrived in June last year, George and Amal Clooney have done their darndest to keep Alexander and Ella out of the spotlight. But the human rights lawyer gave the world a sneak peek of her gorgeous offspring as she emerged from a ritzy New York hotel with the youngsters tucked under each arm.

It was a rare glimpse of the 18-month-olds – who were decked out in jeans and sneakers, and holding matching teddy bears – and onlookers couldn’t help but notice just how much the tots resembled their famous father.

However, it was Amal herself who had commanded the world’s attention the previous evening, when the radiant beauty was named Global Citizen of the Year at the United Nations Correspondents Association Awards.

And as she took the podium to speak passionately about the importance of journalism and to blast President Donald Trump for identifying the US press as an “enemy of the people”, George almost burst with pride.

To onlookers, the Clooneys might appear to have it all – wealth, power and a blissful marriage. But behind the scenes, rumours have been swirling for months that all is not well between the pair.

In the second half of this year, the normally high-profile couple weren’t seen together for almost two months, with Amal, 40, even skipping the annual Halloween party George, 57, and his best friend Rande Gerber throw for their Casamigos tequila brand.
