Julie Anne's partner Peter is full-time carer to Joaquin (left) and Maia.
With a bulging belly and a bag full of overnight gear, Green Party MP Julie Anne Genter climbed onto her e-bike and rode to Wellington Hospital as labour pains seared through her abdomen last November.
But despite the contractions coming every two minutes and lasting 60 seconds at a time, the politician continued pedalling, excited to meet her new baby girl.
The bright-eyed bubba already has a treasury of good reads.
It wasn't the first time Julie Anne had ditched the car for a bike ride while about to deliver. When she and partner Peter Nunns welcomed their first-born son Joaquin in 2018, the former Minister for Women made international headlines after cycling to Auckland City Hospital to give birth.
“I didn't think I'd get as much global news coverage this time, but I did!" laughs the Wellington local, 42, who gave birth to daughter Maia at 3.04 am on 28 November, just 45 minutes after arriving at the hospital. “I thought, 'Well, that's good - the kids' births were equally famous, so no one's missing out!”
On yer bikes! Cycling is still the family's main mode of transport.
Chatting to Woman's Day with her precious five-month-old in a front pack, Julie Anne says Maia has proven to be a chilled baby and a solid nighttime sleeper since peacefully entering the world, although her parents have experienced one minor challenge.
