A Word On Wellbeing
Women's Health & Fitness|September 2017

In an era where ‘having it all’ seems almost (almost) within reach – great job (tick), wealth (tick), fit bod (tick), meals prepped to perfection (tick), boyfriend (tick), best friend (tick) – how this pertains to our health and happiness is curious. Measuring wellbeing is multifaceted and may look different to you compared to the person next to you.

THE WHAT ON WELLBEING

We all know that girl – let’s call her Jane – that has the dream job, curvy body and cash to spare, and yet is excessively unhappy; while Matilda next door has less than two cents to rub together and yet screams positivity. Typically, wellbeing is the state of being comfortable, healthy or happy – overall, being satisfied with life. This is characterised by everything from physical, mental and emotional factors, to social influences. And although psychological theory provides standard units of wellbeing measurement, your happy place might be different to Jane (or Matilda’s) next door.

Health and lifestyle educator Melanie Hansen (melaniehansen.com.au) says a holistic approach is needed to understand the host of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual factors that contribute to a person’s sense of wellbeing.

“During my [health coaching] studies there was a big emphasis on Primary Foods, which are the four areas of life (along with healthy eating) that potentially have the biggest impact on our wellbeing. These are relationships, career, spirituality and exercise,” she says.

“Evidence suggests that strong relationships contribute to a long and happy life.

“Our jobs affect our stress levels, moods and health so doing what you love for work is important. Nourishing our bodies, minds and souls on a spiritual level can dramatically diminish cravings for superficial things in life. And there is research that suggests exercise can be just as effective at reducing stress as anti-depressants.”
