SNAP-CHAT WITH BBC WILDLIFE PICTURE EDITOR TOM GILKS

How did you get into your career?

I’ve always loved nature. After studying fine art and documentary photography, I got a job with an insurance company, building my image library in my free time. I was then made redundant, so took the leap.

Which of your shots is most important to you, and why?

The Chilean flamingos in flight over the Andes, taken in Patagonia. It tells a story, which is what I always aim to do. The conditions were very tough and I was being constantly buffeted by savage winds, a challenge that makes the reward sweeter.
