Regardless of what food you decide is best for your furry companions, there are some safety tips that you should keep in mind when handling specific foods.
For all types of food, it is important to wash your hands before and after feeding your feline friend. Dishes should be glass or metal. Plastics or ceramics can crack and scratch, allowing microscopic areas for germs to collect. Food dishes should be washed after each feeding, using a dishwasher or the hottest water available.
Please be aware that all types of cat food and treats have “use by” or “best by” dates on their packages. You would not want to drink milk that’s past its “sell-by” date, so monitor these dates and feed your babies fresh, up-to-date food!
Dry Food
Dry foods can become stale just like our human cereals or crackers. Consider storing it in an airtight container such as those used for cereal or food staple storage. Wash the container prior to use and dry thoroughly. When it is time to refill the container with a fresh bag of food, make sure the storage container is emptied out and washed. Simply adding more dry food to the used container allows the whole supply to become stale.
