Harkaran Singh Boparai
The ROYAL DEN

With thoughts as wild as redesigning the interiors of Buckingham Palace, Harkaran Boparai, at 29, is leading the way for a new era of design excellence. It is rare to see so much clarity of thought in a man who landed up in design by default, and Harkaran is a surprise package in so many ways.

Architect and Interiors India had the opportunity to step inside his gorgeous new studio in the heart of Delhi flanked by embassies and serving as a little oasis bathed in creativity and royalty. 'A Maharaja's Den' was my first thought when I entered this space.

As we warmed up and discussed the thought behind this gorgeous design studio seated in what he calls the 'durbar', I was astonished at the vision and focus on the client experience on offer. As one enters, they are greeted by a customer care representative and taken above to the durbar. Bathed in powder blues and inspired by a British tea room, this space instantly calms one's mind and sets one thinking.

A cup of coffee and a few minutes later, one is escorted to the waiting area also called the 'chowk' which has multiple seating arrangements, inspired by arts from different eras, emphasising on the timelessness of the design. Each space captures a lasting sense of charm with a carefully curated palette and materials that seamlessly blend heritage and modern elegance, embodying the refined, high-lifestyle approach that defines HBS.

Carpets made in Panipat and rock-solid wood and marble furniture re-emphasise the brand's pillar of strength timelessness, luxury and royalty. The chowk leads you to the Harkaran’s ink blue cabin that is full of energy or the conference room with artwork from the Nizam era showcasing a baithak. A place where decisions are made and creative energies are met, this is where, Harkaran admits, the vision for HBS Studio was born.

In a tete a tete with Sumisha Gilotra, Architect and Interiors India, Harkaran shares more about this vision and his journey.
