WITHIN the Lexus stable, the RX has been arguably the most successful at taking on its premium German competitors. The incorporation of a self-charging hybrid powertrain in 2005 was a defining moment for the RX, and subsequent generations haven't changed the formula much, focusing on comfort and build quality.
With this new, fifth-generation model, however, Lexus claims it has delivered "a complete reinvention of the large luxury SUV" to make it more competitive than ever.
The new RX has arrived at just the right time, with both the Mercedes GLE and BMW X5 receiving mid-life updates this year and electrification featuring across their ranges.
The entry-level RX 350h model comes as a 247bhp 2.5-liter four-cylinder petrol self-charging hybrid, while there's also a 500h 'performance hybrid', which represents the first time Lexus has mated turbocharging with hybrid power.
However, we're testing the mid-range 450h+ plug-in, which will account for the majority of sales. It shares its 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and plug-in hybrid system - as well as its GA-K platform with its smaller NX stablemate.
The petrol engine works alongside an 18.1kWh battery and an electric motor to drive the front wheels, but there's a second electric motor on the rear axle, meaning the set-up can deliver four-wheel drive in certain circumstances. On paper the 450h+ sounds potent enough, with its 304bhp allowing for a 6.5-second 0-62mph time.
