Both Euro NCAP and Global NCAP tests regimes apply protocols to ascertain the safety capabilities of new cars and both testing regimes are slightly different from each other. We look at the fine points of both.
Decoding the test regime

GETTING TOP STAR Ratings for cars is a global standard practice followed by many leading automakers and it is done in the interest of consumers. Since, different regions and countries have their own NCAP programmes, a Global NCAP was formed in 2011 to enhance cooperation between various NCAPS and promote vehicle crash testing in emerging markets. Here's a lowdown of what's involved.

Does Euro NCAP have to test every new car?

Not really as it is not possible to test every new car that comes onto the market.The organization doesn't test all variants of each car offered by the manufacturer.

In real-time, each year a selection is made of the most popular and interesting models. Usually, these are new cars that just have entered the market . However, Euro NCAP may also test cars that are already on sale if it feels it is of interest to consumers. Up to 4 cars are needed for an assessment by Euro NCAP.If a car model is already on sale, Euro NCAP will buy cars it from dealers. Cars are bought anonymously, either from a single dealer or from several, depending on availability.
