The Maserati MC20 lends itself to al fresco motoring really rather well. It has a carbon-fiber tub to deliver the necessary rigidity without any punitive measures; an unusually easy-striding dynamic character that moderates your want for speed and encourages you to just enjoy the ride; and catwalk-model styling. It really is a supercar made to be admired, compared with rivals much more savage on the senses.

There's already a year-long queue for the new Cielo variant, which has a compact folding metal roof with an electrochromic glass panel and is about 10% pricier than the coupé.

It weighs only 65kg more than the coupé, too (the penalty is almost double that with the Lamborghini Huracán Evo), and its performance statistics are uncompromised.

Dihedral doors, cutaway sills and a stowed roof make entry into the low-slung driver's seat that little bit easier than it might otherwise be.

The secondary control layout is quite sparse, and the material specification of our test car has been augmented by Maserati's extended carbon-fiber and Alcantara options, together costing nearly £10,000.
