Apparently, people have a hard time imagining that you can drive something as wild, low and outlandish-looking as the BAC Mono on the road. Even wannabe owners do, according to the Mono’s Liverpool-based single-seat sports car maker. Funny old world, eh? You design a lightweight special with open wheels, an open cockpit and a central driving position, which looks, feels and drives so much like a junior formula racing car, only to discover those people staring slack-jawed at it aren’t also thinking: “Well, that looks perfect for a carefree weekend in the Lake District”. Who would have thought it?
It’s tight for space, Matt, but there’s no need to milk it
At any rate, it’s something that BAC would like to change. “You really can drive and use our cars as if they were sports bikes,” they say. “On any day, on any road you like. Just go and enjoy.”
Can you really? It took a wet day in North Wales, a mix of town and country roads, a convenience store with a generous and accessible car park and a run for two pints of semi-skimmed to find out.
Space constraints govern how you turn busy-looking wheel
