KILLARNEY'S MALMESBURY SWEEP RENAMED IN HONOUR OF SAREL VAN DER MERWE

South African motorsport legend Sarel 'Supervan' van der Merwe, who officially retired from racing in 2022 at the age of 75, was honoured at the Cape Motorsport Festival at Killarney on 10 December 2022, when the high-speed double apex Malmesbury Sweep was officially renamed Sarel's Sweep at a poignant ceremony on the spot during the lunch break.

Van der Merwe, who knew nothing about the whole plan, was sent out to do a parade lap in one of the Team Africa Le Mans Ginettas, only to find a small crowd blocking the circuit at Malmesbury Sweep. Present were Western Cape Premier Alan Winde, federal leader of the Democratic Alliance John Steenhuisen, Western Province Motor Club president Dr. Greg Mills and chairman Tim Reddell, Killarney executive manager Des Easom, race officials and a number of international motorsport stars, many of whom raced against Van der Merwe in his international heyday, including former Formula 1 drivers Emmanuele Pirro and Jan Lammers.
