Finn Mullen extols the virtues of his newly acquired longboard SUP.

Long Lines

Lines are pouring into the bay, every now and again a wave explodes out the back and scatters surfers back to the shore like a well struck strike to skittles in a bowling alley. There’s a bit of breeze going too, it’s offshore so making the waves look sweet in the sun but the paddling into them is going to be an honest affair. Oh and sprinkle in some big spring tides for extra spice. I haven’t watched it for long, but I can tell from where everyone is sitting - out the back – and how many waves I’ve seen ridden – none – that you’ll earn your waves the hard way today. A surfer pulls up beside me as I whip out my newly acquired 10’ longboard SUP – he doesn’t say anything, there’s no need, he has, “You’re taking that … out there…today?” – written all over his face. I get it, it’s not an obvious choice, but I’m in the heady days of a new relationship. This board can do no wrong, and even if it did, I’d forgive it, again and again. It’s new found love, the most forgiving, potent ….and shallow kind!

New love

What is it about new boards? I love SUP surfing – I don’t need an aphrodisiac. But then someone shows me a new design and it’s like being shot at close range by Cupid’s arrow, while eating a plate full of oysters. Am I really so easily led? In my defence - its rails, they’re so fine, its tail so thin, it’s like no SUP board of this size that I have seen before and screams ‘try me, try me’. How could I resist? I mean obviously it’s possible, it’s just I’m chronically weak willed in the face of a new design.

Paddle Science #18 - The Body Fortress. Boosting Immunity

At this time of year, the rate of infection for colds and flu normally tends to slow down as we enter warmer, springtime months. However, if you’ve been anywhere at all in the world recently, then there’s one word you can’t escape at the moment: Coronavirus. Infection rates, mortality rates and prognostic data are changing daily at the moment. As a new virus none of us have previously been exposed to it, meaning that currently, we have no immunity to it. It’s only through being infected by a virus that our bodies are able to make the right antibodies to not only enable us to recover but to also help protect us from any recurrent and future infection from it. If you’re keen to stay well and keep getting out on your SUP board this spring, then focussing on boosting your immune system is a positive step to take.

Desire Lines

We were on the outskirts of Helsinki, scouting a new destination for our sup camps. Just 45 minutes’ drive from the city, the untouched nature of the Nuuksio National Park stretched out before us. Mirror-smooth lakes, wild herbs and an impressive fauna waiting to be explored over on board or on foot via the many desire lines made by the land mammals.
